I was experiencing the same problem on maverick and my auth.log looked
exactly like jkazimirski's in post #30. The interesting thing is that
other users on my system without administrator privileges did not
experience the problem. I did apt-get upgrade and do not have the
problem anymore.

I think my session problem is combined with screensaver . I've found a thread
on forum with similar bug in previous releases.
I've got it in updated Lucid.

This has nothing to do with pam; unsetting the package.
The errors show failed login attempts on the console. If the getty on

the X session is running on the wrong tty. Please check this with '$

Can someo0ne notice if the latest update of pam fix this problem?

yes, and it didn't happen again.
I wanted to know if it was a known bug or just symptom of an attempted
intrusion... if it's possible to tell.
thanks

clh, I don't know if it is a known bug in the sense that we know
exactly the cause of the session shutting down. It certainly does
appear to be an intrusion attempt (but I am hardly an expert). However,
the session should not shut down due to such attempts. This kind of
behavior is a form of
Ok, thanks for your answer!
it's been some time and updates since I saw this, so I can't provide more info.
For sure I wasn't using firefox (maybe chrome or something else, when the
session died).

I don't think this is actually an intrusion attempt. Frankly, I see this
on systems in completely segregated networks. I see this when a system
has no network connectivity. I wish I knew better what was going on.
It's a very strange oddity. I'm going to ask a really smart person to
take a peak
Have you tried the instructions in comment #4 (except for sending your

I have seen similar behaviour in ubuntu 10.04 LTS - Lucid Lynx.
Is it a bug as mentioned above? or an attack? (also suggested above)
thanks

MoCKeR, I believe that the error message is a symptom of the problem.
The dbus would fail to unregister if your session was already dead. It
is likely that we would need the entire error log in order to find the
source of the issue. You can easily attach it to this bug report.

Jaime, thank you for taking the time to report this. First, please
upload the result of this:
cd /etc/apparmor.d/ ls
Next, as a security precaution, we would like to make sure your firewall
is running and increase the level of logging by your firewall. Please
run the following commands:
sudo
Also, we would like for you to upload your firefox history file to
double-check for any suspicious websites.

ok... apparmor and ufw are now protecting your system.
I don't see anything that looks suspicious in your history. I noticed
that you tend to visit the same sites regularly. I also noticed that you
haven't strayed far from the norm. I have not heard of any recent
