The status Fix Released confuses me a little:
As said in comment 30 and 31 of mozilla-bugs #278383, the problem of
automatic updating at startup and at fix time intervals (see bug
description of this bug) belongs to another bug: mozilla-bugs #480945,
which is not solved yet...

This will only land in 3.0 and later. We nor Mozilla can add this to a
stable vesion as it does not meet SRU guidelines. Closing bug due to
this reason.

Karsten Düsterloh released a patch to fix the issue for Thunderbird 3,
see the bug report. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much
interest in fixing the stable branch as well.
Applying the patch to TB 2 works fine, but it still won't fix the bug.

does it not check mail unless you click get mail, it will not run the
forward mail to address filter I have set up. It will star the

addresses as a Unix and Linux wide problem. We are still awaiting a
resolution.

I was looking at the upstream bug,
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278383 , and it looks like it is
only recorded there as a FreeBSD problem, as opposed to a problem for Linux
users as well. I wonder if that needs to be addressed?

Does that look accurate on how to reproduce this bug?
To reproduce:
1. from the command line:
$ echo test | mail -s none username
2. Press Control+Shift+T or select the Get All New Messages menu item... mail
does not show up. However, selecting Get New Messages for movemail works.

I have this problem too. I filed it as bug #89474. Over in that ticket,
someone mentioned that this bug is already reported upstream as Bug
278383 (and has apparently been open for a couple of years).
