This problem is still present in ubuntu 10.04 LTS updated as of Oct 9,
2010. It can be easily fixed for individual computers following the

Could you please type xrandr --prop>xrandr_output.txt in a terminal and
attach the output to this bug report? This should give us your
monitor's EDID information. Note that sometimes I have to type the
xrandr --prop command twice to get the EDID information.
