That really doesn't sound healthy. It sounds like the read/write-head is
hitting something, or the drive losing power for a moment (I have auto-
select set to 2 seconds). I'll have to find out with which version this
behaviour started, since it hasn't always done that.
Just in case this is
Unfortunately I can't reliably reproduce it, most of the time there is no
strange sound when grub starts.
Since it only happens when grub is starting I tend to rule out a faulty hdd.

UDMA7 it works fine with 1.97 which is with 9.10 .i have installed that
on my first hdd and no sound but 1.98 makes noise every time..increase
auto select time and can reproduce it for a longer time :)

So is mine :) I increased the timeout, but it didn't happen the last few
boot attempts. I don't reboot this laptop that often (suspend most of
the time), so I encountered this noise only a few times as of yet.
Does this scratchy sound appear every time you boot your machine?

I updated and ran dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc yet noice is there im not
sure but I have a distant memory about hearing this during 9.04 not sure
..my hdd got killed after few months of buying while using 9.04..wonder
if that was the case...
