Same here, does not work since years.
Actually using NVidia 390.77-driver.
Already tried to change the initalise-keys, without effect. Framebuffer
on/off in OpenGL-settings makes no difference. Nothing happens, no way
to activate water-effect.

Same problem here, I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, and NVidia 8600GT. When I try
to use the water effect, the screen goes dark for a while, and then
returns to normal, but without the effect.
Really weird, this is happening with my gnome-terminal too, when I press
the TAB key.

Chris,
Yes, after you download the three files and install the all.deb file,
you should then install the other two files you downloaded, THEN reboot.
Hope that helps clarify things.

Bonzo,
Go to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/, look for the
2.5.34-lucid folder (not the ones with the rc- suffix - those are
release candidates), and download three files - the linux-
headers-2.6.34-020634-all.deb file, the linux-

OK, here's my solution - it worked for me: uninstalled the proprietary
fglrx driver, upgraded to kernel 2.6.34-lucid release, installing the
binary kernel, linux-headers, and all-deb packages, then enabled the
xorg-edgers archive ppa and upgraded the open source video driver.
Enabled dynamic
I've got the same problem as well on 64-bit Lucid w/ HD5770 and fglrx 10.4,
10.5 and 10.6.
The water effect only worked with my HD4200 IGP using the open drivers.

Same bug, Lucid Lynx 64-bit, fglrx graphics driver, ATI Mobility Radeon

work. Get dark screen when trying to initiate the effect. Tried
upgrading to latest ATI driver (10.3), but the bug persists.

Thanks! But when I use the open-source driver, the video card fan runs all
the time. Anyway to fix that? Is there a way to configure the open-source
driver not to run the card so hard?
I'll try looking myself, but if you could point me to a solution directly
that'd be appreciated.

i don't see/hear video card fan i don't know if it runs all the time
(but i think that is always running) , i have a desktop pc and i don't
know how configure open source driver, xorg.conf must not to be edited.
