I get the two assert lines.
No segfault/crash.
But, I find an instance of gnome-appearance-properties in the background taking
100% CPU.
That is a problem discussed in some older bug-reports and I wonder if there is
any relation.
I have to do a 'killall gnome-appearance-properties' to get the

Hm... cannot reproduce the segfault with a 64-bit live CD (daily, fully
updated), I'm only seeing the two warnings.

Segfaults seem only to affect 64-bit users, will try to get a backtrace
of that too.
