Same thing here, with nm-applet 0.6.6 in Hardy ; the trouble appears
since 2.6.24.11 kernel. I have a b4306 firmware and use b43-fwcutter.

I have quite the same trouble in gutsy, but this is not systematic. I
can do it systematically if I force an AP (using iwconfig) and use nm-
applet after. look at bug #129908 for more information.
