If it is relevant, it tries to play the file but it only makes
screeching or static type noises.
Also since i originally reported this bug I did a fresh install of the
64bit version and the bug persists.

It did not work in totem for me.
I have gstremer0.10-ffmepeg (0.10.0-3build1), and gstreamer0.10-plugins-
good(0.10.18-1ubuntu1) installed.

Yes, VLC uses its own codecs. Did you try totem. It works fine for me
as well. Could you see if you have the plugins that upstream asked to
install, qtdemux (gst-plugins-good) and gst-ffmpeg.

Rhythmbox developer says it works for him, perhaps it is a bug specific
to the gstreamer packages in the repositories and not the fault of
rhythmbox?
If i remember correctly VLC does not use gstreamer it has its own
codecs, so this could be a possibility.

I confirmed that the file was not corrupt by playing it in VLC media
player, still not working in rhythmbox.
