Ronny's fix worked for me.
I now have:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Oct 11 21:45 cdrom -> /dev/sr0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Oct 11 21:38 cdrom3 -> sr0

I just noticed something very interesting:
On the HP ProBook, there was no device file "/dev/cdrom", only the following
symlink:
/dev/cdrom1 -> sr0
After executing the following command:
sudo ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom
the issue seems fixed, Kaffeine plays through the Audio CD as expected.
I can confirm this issue also on Debian Squeeze on a HP ProBook 4515s.
Interestingly, the same system works fine on a Dell machine. Looks like
this issue is hardware-dependend...

I see this too in Lucid. Seems like kaffeine thinks the CD consists of
only one track. If you do the "forward one track" button it immediately
stops; if you wait for the first track to finish it also stops.

Kaffeine 1.0-pre3
Are you giving Kaffeine enough time?
I get the same burst, then it seems to be buffering. Then a jittery start, but
after about half a minute (that's a guess) it's off.
