Since the (ahem) buggy hardware is no longer available for doing
troubleshooting with, we'll have to close the bug for now. However
please feel free to reopen if you or anyone else has the same HW and can
reproduce this issue using the latest development version of Ubuntu and
is willing to do
(Fwiw, this sounds similar to lp #515501 which is confirmed gone in -16)

computer was eaten by ants so I had to buy a new laptop and it has an
Intel GPU. Now I'm filing new GPU bugs!
