Switching to /dev/lp0 worked for me too.
Here is some details about the problem:

I experienced the same bug on 7.04 with a LaserJet 4000TN. Switching to
/dev/lp0 fixed the issue.

I had a similar problem with my HP LJ 2300 when I upgraded from dapper
to edgy (actually it was a "fresh install").
I wonder if there is a problem with cups trying to use the hp specific
drivers, rather than the generic usb/post script stuff.

Just tried to configure LaserJet 1300 in Edgy. Although the parport
kernel module correctly recognizes the printer, gnome-cups-manager
cannot detect it, and defaults to the "Use another printer by specifying
a port" option.

I can confirm the bug. I spent hours this afternoon trying to configure
a HP LaserJet 1300 (connected to the local parallel port) in Dapper.
Things I did include:
1. Trying the hpijs 0.9.7 driver and the recommended postscript driver.
2. Adding and configuring using the "Printing" Administration t
It should also be noted that cups and a few other packages were updated
today through update manager, although the update did not solve any
problems until printer was unplugged and plugged back in.

I reinstalled cups and its dependencies (--purging), reinstalled, and
still the same errors. Tried ljet4 driver still same errors. Unplugged
printer and plugged it back in, and now everything works. Not sure why,
possible kernel driver problem?
