Running showkeys in a text terminal shows that the volume up and down
keys (Fn F5 and Fn F6 in my system) only issue a key press event, but NO
key release event.

I'm facing similar simptoms as MacRules.
The system is an Olivetti 820 notebook running lucid from a Live CD. After
using Fn volume +/-, the keyboard locks and open windows cannot be moved or
resized. Also, the upper menu bar becomes non-responsive.
I have tested eight different distros, but
I am not sure if this is related, but I have similar behaviour on my Mivvy G310
netbook.
When pressing Fn+volume up/down/mute or webcam key, I get repeated key events
and can no longer use my keyboard.
Mouse keeps working and when switching from terminal i can go on.
