I have the same notebook MSI EX720 and exactly the same problem with poor sound
quality.
Here is what you should do :
Enter this command in your terminal :
[code]sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf[/code]
And add this lines at the end of file :
[code]options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-di
Jonathan, unfortunately it did not help.
Do you have any other solutions?

Here is additional information about this problem:
I have a laptop with builtin four speakers and a subwoofer (4+1), enough
high quality. Also I have the external two-way system of 2 +1. When I
play music on Windows 7 I have a good sound from built-in speakers and
from external speakers too. And q

By the way, you know that on the official site of Realtek has drivers for this
audio card?

Please use karmic-updates to install the latest kernel
(2.6.31-19-generic), then add the ubuntu-audio-dev PPA and install
linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.31-19-generic.
