I would like to add that i faced a similar problem with VLC using
--input-slave alsa:// .
While dmesg shows no errors , i was getting stuttering audio while recording.
Only workaround i found was to launch vlc using the padsp launcher script and
using --input-slave oss://

adding:
options snd_hda_intel model=laptop
options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N position_fix=1

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf , the problem seems to be solved.

using Lucid alpha 3 live cd i don't get any audio input at all, using internal
or external mic; checked using gnome sound mixer (nothing muted) .
