The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable
Well, the fat drivers are in vanilla kernel so setting that as package -
perhaps it will help.

Using Ubuntu 7.10 with kernel 2.6.22-14-generic will all updates
applied, Bug still present.
I am having the same problem after partitioning a new harddrive,
installing a clean windows, then installing a clean ubuntu using the
fat32 as a shared drive.
Only one folder is non-writeable (Jonathan).
A workaround is to use 'sudo' (or login as root) to operate within the
non-writable directory.
I also noticed this, any file named 'desktop.ini' within the non-
writable directory is also non-writable, even though it has the 'w'
flag.

Well, I can confirm this on an Acer Aspire 5672 with dual boot for

This is not a samba bug, removed the reference to the samba package.
Michael, Nicolò and Max, can you please tell us the version of the kernel and
Ubuntu you are using? The commands to determine that are:
uname -a
lsb_release -a
Thanks

I want to confirm that this happens LOCALLY. Not sure what package it's
in, though. Looks like it might be a kernel thing, though (who else
modifies/sets permissions on mounted drives)
Any workarounds, please? This is really irritating!

Philip, thanks for your contribution, but what in the bug report
indicates that this user is using Samba, or for that matter a network to
connect to the drive?
As I read it, both submitters have a local partition.

I just had this problem again on ubuntu edgy
Nautilus shows some subfolders which are registered with Windows Vista (as

I really have no idea why this is because there are no access restrictions on
fat filesystems and only some folde
Nicolò,
