FWIW, this happens on a Dell Latitude D420 too. Here's the uname

Could you please include the following additional information, if you have not
already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as
required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:

and this issue compromises the duration of certain laptop's batteries
(letting alone that annoying continuous fan noise...).

With the latest kernel, I only experience this while the laptop's
plugged into AC. If I'm running on battery, the fan seems to behave like
it's supposed to.

Fan doesn't stop, on idle battery holds up about 1 hour (on Windows Vista more
than 2 hours).

Sorry, I was wrong. The noise came from the built-in microfone which
transferred the fan-noise to the soundchip. Disabling the mic in
alsamixer did the job. Quiet now.

Same here. Upgraded from Edgy to Feisty today and the fan goes to the
max and won't slow down. Pretty annoying. I have an Aopen mini PC with
an Intel T2500 CPU. With Edgy I never had this problem. Going to re-
install Edgy.

I'm on feisty with a Samsung R55, and I've got a similar problem: The fan
doesn't stop.
/var/log/messages hos nothing about "fan" or "thermal", if that helps. If you
need anything else, just say the word.
