Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dpkg

When trying to download and install updates with update manager, after
it downloads and attempts to install it throws up an error. It says:

   Extracting templates from packages: 100%
   Preconfiguring packages...
(reading database ... 50%dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
files list file for package 'python-serial' is missing final newline
   E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned error code (2)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:

it then does nothing else. I would really like to know how to get past
this, as there are important security updates i'd like to take care of.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10: Karmic Koala
as for my version of dpkg the output of apt-cache policy dpkg is:

   dpkg:
     Installed: 1.15.4ubuntu2
