This is now fixed; the nouveau kernel module has moved into the main
kernel image, and gets loaded before vga16fb by the magic of
modules.order.
Current daily images should boot correctly for everyone.
** Changed in: linux-backports-modules-2.6.32 (Ubuntu)
Status: Triaged => Fix Released
I did that in the LiveUSB but it seems that the update-initramfs is
using the configuration of the read-only fs mounted at /rofs. So the
changes do not reflect

I simply blacklisted vga16fb, so vga16fb will never be loaded:
myhostname:~# cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-for-nouveau.conf
# see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-backports-modules-2.6.32/+bug/530451
blacklist vga16fb
That's it.
To regernerate your initramfs type:
sudo update-in
I tried inserting nouveau before vga16fb but the changes seems not to be
reflected at boot time, vga16fb still loads before nouveau. I'm running
the 03/06 daily build livecd for desktop-amd64. Should I regenerate the
initramfs?

Ok. This is going to get fixed when the next kernel upload, with the
.33 drm backported wholesale, lands in Lucid. Then we won't need a
linux-backports-modules-nouveau package, and nouveau will be
automatically inserted into modules.order in the right spot.
