My issue is resolved by creating a new user and using this user to log
on. Seems some strange setting in the (old, upgraded?) user profile!

Same to me, no window borders in gnome, kde. ubuntu 9.10, nvidia, laptop.
After manual starting of metacity --replace -c it crashes.
After second launch, window have borders.
This is not affected by compiz, with no decorations, borderlessness remains.

Actually he says compiz cannot run on his hardware so apparently gnome-
session is failing to start metacity.
