I have a clean install of Lucid on an Acer Ferrari 5000 with Radeon
x1600. The laptop monitor was just fine, but any external monitor gives
the same weavy-effect.
Just to confirm that disabling KMS solved my problem as well. 3D still
working as expected.
thanks for the solution!

Had this problem on a nw8440 and 2.6.32-21-generic. As Wayne Stark
wrote on 2010-04-13, disabling KMS solved this for me.
echo options radeon modeset=0 /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf
I don't use an external display but at least this solved the issue on the
laptop display.

I can confirm that disabling KMS also solves this problem on my external
display.

right, with the modeset=0 I have two flicker free screens (although I
had to reconfigure the resolutions and disable the mirroring again).
Tested in the regular ubuntu -21 kernel

I also confirm that disabling KMS solves this problem. The only side
effect is the load screen which is not anymore in the right resolution.
(the solution with radeonhd and « Option MigrationHeuristic greedy

is working again :-)

Sorry, Robert didn't wok on my hp nx9420 (Radeon Mobility X1600).
In GDM both screens have been wavy and after login the external vga remains
wavy and the build-in is ok.
Should I also try DVI or do you think that this won't work too if VGA doesn't
work?

I have the same wave problem on my external VGA TFT monitor. I used 10.04
beta 2 and yesterday I update to release. Problem still exists.
My notebook is IBM/Lenovo T60 with Mobility Radeon X1300.
I don't have this problem before with Ubuntu 9.04 and 8.04

Can anyone affected by this on lucid please try the 2.6.33.3 mainline
kernel out to see if the problem is fixed there? The drm code from
2.6.33.3 will be pulled into a kernel update in the not too distant
future and I have one confirmation that the problem is fixed there.

I think this bug may affect me as well. I have an MSI Wind U210 with a
Radeon x1250. It works OK, but changing resolution will often knock even
my LCD panel into flickering wildly. Plugging in an external monitor is
absolutely terrible. The waves are so bad you get dizzy in about five
seconds. The
With the flgrx driver the external monitor is no longer wavy, but it
cannot be configured to it's native 1680x1050 resolution (same as the
resolution of the built-in monitor, which does accept 1680x1050
resolution and works fine).
