Public bug reported: This bug is similar to the following, but affects the REALTek ALC883 chip set. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/523953 In brief: before adding the line "options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N position_fix=1 enable=yes" to my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file, I could hear sound from the mic and line-in jacks through my speakers and control it with the GNOME-alsamixer (both muting and volume) but I could not record that sound stream with any software. Adding the position fix seems to have done the trick. Please let me know if you need more info that is provided below. All the best, Reuben
