Public bug reported: Binary package hint: light-themes
When using the new light-themes, certain elements look like buttons - despite the fact that they should mainly indicate a location or a selection (e.g. indicate information). The problem appear at several places where it is the aim to highlight some information to the user. For an example, one can take a look at Nautilus - or Synaptics. This is a result of the heavy use of gradients in the new theme. The paradox with the theme is that the actual buttons (in the toolbar - or in the scrolling bar) do not use visible button elements (e.g. shadows or gradients that give the visual impression of physical buttons) The problem is best illustrated with the attached screenshot: 1. the selected items in the side bar of Nautilus (list view?) clearly give the visual impression of a pysical button. 2. the selected type of view for nautilus seems to be a button a very heavy on in additon, which draws the attention to this secondary element (every user sees immediately what type of view he has selected, anyway) 3. at this position is the only element that actually should look like a button, since when pressing here on can make a selection. 4. even the location bar reminds of a series of buttons - but the first task of the location bar is to provide information to the user, where the actual folder is located. Granted, some of the elements can be used as a "kind of button" - however: 5. if we look at the actual button on the UI - we can clearly see that buttons are actually just represented by an graphical element. This can also be seen when looking to the panel, where the "button"-elements have been virtually eliminated. The issue leads to the unfortunate situation, where the actual buttons do not look like buttons (which is fine) - and secondary elements that are no buttons resemble to physical buttons (mostly because of the heavy use of gradients). Expected look: The elements should have a flat look that does not be confused with physical buttons. E.g. a tool-tip like look. The user-provided themes have some good example how this problem can be avoided. ** Affects: light-themes (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [ambiance radiance] selected items (info) look like buttons https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539821 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
