No comments here for over 10 years so tested uninstall of Thunderbird
60.4.0 in Ubuntu 19.04. No errors on uninstall and search of disk didn't
find anything put there by the installation process.

Thanks for this additional information.
The problem here is mozilla-thunderbird leaves auto-generated files
around. It should delete them in the postrm script.

This has happened to me when trying to purge other stuff as well.
I'd probably say this is more of an apt bug than thunderbird, but I
don't know what causes it.
