Public bug reported:

My system won't boot with a Western Digital MyBook 1TB attached via USB *and*
configured to mount it via /etc/fstab. It will boot when the line in fstab is
commented out and mounting the device can be done manually from the prompt once
the system has booted.
I have no idea what goes wrong, but the display says "Waiting for
/var/lib/backuppc" (which is the mountpoint of the device) and it is stuck
there with some progress indicator continuing "forever". This is a new issue
since upgrading to some 10.04 alpha which didn't occur with 9.10 and earlier
versions.
I see no disk activity at that time on the usb-drive and the system does not
hang at that point, hitting ctrl+alt+del responds quickly enough.

Thinking that it may have been some xfs-issue, I've completely wiped the
disk and reformatted it using a single ext4 partition. That didn't help
either.

The last time I checked whether recent updates had fixed the issue, I
had to comment the line in fstab again and had to shut down the system
completely (halt rather than reboot) before trying again, it wouldn't
boot otherwise and seemed to be stuck at roughly the same point. When I
wait a bit and hit some keys on my keyboard I'm presented with a shell
that appears to come from 'mountall'.
