The problem has gotten worse if you look at this other bug report
575162, as now it fails to allow me to create a VM at all, right at the
end of the creation process, from the CLI or with Virt-manager.

Also, could you try installing Lucid while using the "Ubuntu Intrepid"
setting in virt-manager?

Yes, the problem is still there, in exactly the same form with all
patches applied.
I get the exact same error message whenever I try to create a new VM
with KVM.

Note that grub-pc 1.98-1ubuntu6 will not configure since the postinstall
script depends on /dev/disk/by-id/ and that directory does not virtio
disk does not provide that, instead only /dev/disk/by-uuid and /dev/disk
/by-path will exist.
