This is a regression, and makes the notifications unusable unless I
enable composition (which doesn't work for me). Previously the
notifications would simply disappear on mouseover and let me not only
read but click on things under them. Now they don't.

notify-osd itself hasn't updated since 9 March, so that's probably the
wrong package to assign this to; assigning the Desktop Team for further
triaging here.

It's been pointed out to me (thanks, Chris!) that this is a gtk+2.0
regression. Opening a task there and marking this as a duplicate of bug

What you're seeing there is a bubble being displayed while the
compositing of the wm (be it compiz or metacity+compositor) is disabled.
Check that you're running with a compositing window-manger (aka Desktop
Effects set to anything but None).

My graphics driver (sis imedia) never supported any compositing but the bubble
fully disappeared (not faded out as it does when there is a compositing wm
running) when I moved my mouse over it since it was first used in Jaunty.
It was working fine, without fading, earlier today before I updated
