I get the behaviour so:
Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
funny thing is, for me, it works first every time on a new install, or on the
live CD.
As soon as you have installed, done the first connection setup, reboot.
Then there are problems.
Usually you get the USB modem popping up as a driv
this also applies to the model: E1550
solution, as stated above:
apt-get install usb-modeswitch
works as well.

The 3g modem now works after setting up the modem in 'edit connections',
although I also had to disable CHAP in configure settings under ppp settings.

Yes the modem is detected for me too. But the driver doesnt load even if
it is detected. I have exactly the same dmesg as the bug reporter.

Could someone confirm whether a username and/or password is required for
UK Vodafone? Or, please advise on how to debug (have checked log files
and lsusb, and the modem IS detected).

Try "sudo modprobe option", it worked for me. The module somehow does
not load automatically, so you have to load it manually.

Installing usb-modeswitch made my modem show up as Bus 002 Device 004:
ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB Modem and my mobile
BB connection just works now as before.
IMHO (as usb-modeswitch was not installed in Karmic), it should be
included in upgrade to Lucid.

Han you tell me what the tag means? I thought the attachment from uname -a
would show what Kernel is running - does the bugrep need more info?
