I gather from your comments you are on Lucid. Well the window management buttons is a whole separate issue. There is a lot of debate about that (see bug #532633) but it's a whole separate issue from this. There is probably a gconf key to hide the messaging menu, but I can't find it right now. **

Can it be changed back? It also puts the mail icon there and I do not want the mail icon. Also the window sizing and closing icons are on the wrong side of the window. But, so far so good, I am telling everyone about this version and how good it is. Thanks... for everything Paul On 26 March 20

What version of Ubuntu are you running? If you are on Lucid, the volume applet has merged for the time being with the new message menu under the name "Indicator Applet." So you can just right click and add the Indicator Applet to the panel to get the volume applet back. Just so you know, there are
