Daniel, this patch won't work for my machine, which reports Dell Studio
1558, and not the XPS model. I note that 1555 and 1557 (otherwise
identical hardware) are already listed. So presumably this is just an
oversight. What's the proper course here, file a new bug?

No Sound from Head phone
Andy, the driver never keys on the human-readable string 1558 or
whatever. It uses the PCI SSID, which you can find in lspci -nv under
Subsystem for class 0403. Because you didn't attach the relevant
information, I have no idea whether the patch for *this* bug works for
you. You should file a new
I assume this is the relevant block? I'll admit it seems silly to file
a new bug for a one-line patch:
00:1b.0 0403: 8086:3b56 (rev 06)
Subsystem: 1028:0413
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
Memory at f0a0 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Andy, that's the info, yes, but you *must* file a new bug report. One
hardware per bug report when it comes to kernel issues.

I have identical symptoms on a Dell Studio 1558 (Arrandale, HM55

likewise successful for me.

Hello Andy:
I still have a couple of other minor issues but David at Canonical assures
me the newest Version 10.4 will take care of it. I've found Ubuntu is much
faster than Windows7 on my computer.
Do you have any other issues?
Bob.

I had the same problem on a Dell Studio 17/1749. I fixed it by
generating this file and rebooting:

Hi Daniel, Robert and I have tested removing linux-backports-modules-

the ubuntu-audio-dev ppa and still had the issue of audio not coming out
of the headphones after a reboot.

Thank you for the recommendation Daniel. I will test the PPA packages
and let you know how it goes. In the meantime note that the HDMI issue
that was mentioned previously was resolved by making sure the cable was
fully/properly inserted.

Hi Daniel,
As Robert has mentioned we have tested installing the linux-backports-
modules-alsa-karmic-generic and rebooting, but that does not seem to
work. Please also note that HDMI audio is also an issue for this laptop,
but I will have Robert file a new report for that issue.
