I am not sure if this is the right spot or not but I appear to be having
a similar problem. There is one key difference, or perhaps the users
above haven't tried this yet. When GDM (login-screen) is supposed to
show up my monitor displays its no signal or connect source message.

No, it seems that it was the boot manager that created all this situation.
Now in edgy, now that a different boot manager is installed, i haven't faced
that problem...

Sorry but I didn't say boot loader (grub).
If I'm not mistaken a boot manager is a program running while booting
your system and turns all services on (deamons, drivers, file systems
etc...) and then directs you to the log-in screen where you type you username
and password and the log-in to

Even I just can't get it though that a single package made the whole system
malfunction, it's pretty easy to understand it. Just consider that linux is a
block of systems functioning together depending on each other. One helping
another. One

i can load the text mode (ctrl+alt+f1) but there is nothing i tried that
will work, i'vve tried updating the distro, reinstalling gdm, installing
and configuring the drivers for graphic, reinstalling ubuntu desktop...
nothing work...

Thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu do you use? When the
black screen appears, can you change to the console hitting ctrl-alt-f1?
Can you check /var/log/gdm/:0.log and /var/log/Xorg.*.log for anything
interesting?
