I have the same problem with black text on the menus. I have installed
on two Compaq Evo N610C laptops and both have black text instead of
white. This happens using the live cd and on the installed system. When
running the live cd on my Compaq Presario V6000, the text appears
correctly in white.

I am having the exact same issue. I am also using a IBM Thinkpad X31.
Tried changing the colour with "GNOME Color Chooser" but nothing seemed
to apply to that font colour.
Is there anyway we can at least change the color from inside the Config
Editor at least?
The only solution I have been able

No amount of switching about with themes seems to help.

I guess you can do it in two step
1/ guest session -> to see if it's configuration specific
2/ usb daily live available at
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/daily-live/current/ to see if you get
that on the live session too.
Thanks a lot for the additional info :)

Ah. I fear it might require similar or identical hardware. Perhaps, at
the least, a machine with the same (rather old) ATI Mobility Radeon
graphics chipset.
I will look for the guest login option.
What do you wish me to boot from USB to confirm this?

The booting issues are quite differents and are linked to other issues.
Yeah, the last netbook-launcher wasn't to fix that. The report is still
incomplete because I can't reproduce it there. I tried numerous time with
different config and laptop and I don't have that. Some people in QA tried too
A little further info:
As of this afternoon's update, which I saw involved a netbook-launcher
change, this problem is still occurring.
Since the update of yesterday (15 Apr '10) I now have a graphical boot

bootup, the colour

I am not sure that I have a guest account, but if I can find it or turn
it on, I will try that.
I have also tried logging in to normal GNOME, which works perfectly and
looks fine. However, GNOME makes very sparing use of transparency

Can you try switching to another theme? (the gnome capplet is Appearance
one, right) and see if the color changes? (try the Ambiance/Radiance
one)

Thanks for the reply.
No, I have not changed any font colours; all was on defaults. I am not
sure what "the gnome capplet" is. I've looked in Appearance and the only
font colours selection I can see is under Themes | Customise | Colours;
is that where you mean? If so, everything in there is listed
Thanks for reporting this bug and help to make ubuntu better.
Did you change the font color from the gnome capplet? (They should be white by
default).
Can you try with the guest user session to see what colors they have?
