Excuse me, after upgrading to oneiric i overlooked the fact that now
openjdk was the default jvm on the box with intel hd graphic.
The problem is not observable with openjdk, only with sun jdk.
So it is NOT a problem of graphics driver. With java-6-sun jre all
problems also exist on Intel® Ironla

Workaround: Change to unity-2d.
The error vanishes when using unity-2d. So maybe it depends on compiz
vs. metacity or even on graphics drivers (radeon hd 3200). I will try on
another box with intel hd graphics later.

radiance and swing dialogs do not work well here, they are almost not
usable, as some buttons are almost hidden at corners. This concerns
dialog windows that are not resizeable and others as well, as resizing
does not lead to completely drawn buttons.
Moreover, sometimes the grey borders at bottom
