Public bug reported: If I select PulseAudio output for Phonon, the stream coming in to PulseAudio (according to pavucontrol) comes from the PulseAudio ALSA plugin, not directly from Phonon. This may be the reason Amarok crashes on startup when using the GStreamer backend (see KDE bug #232068).
The problem of Phonon audio output reaching PulseAudio by way of ALSA is also present in the Xine backend, but this does not cause applications to crash. However, the Xine backend does not play certain FLAC files correctly. The reason I am reporting this here instead of upstream is that ubuntu- bug recognizes libphonon4 as being part of qt4-x11, so it seems that Ubuntu is using Phonon from Qt4. Colin Guthrie says (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=232068#c3) that the correct Phonon to use is the one from Gitorious (presumably http://gitorious.org/phonon), not the one from Qt4.
