On it'd little brother system, E4310, the sound card lives at 00:1b.0, which is
absent here. They have virtually the
same chipset. I suspect that the pci device hasn't been enumerated due to some
ACPI/BIOS issue.

The BIOS doesn't show any sound cards on the computer. I have another
system with the same BIOS and similar configuration, and it lists all
the devices on the computer, including sound card, modem, wlan card.
This one it doesn't, so I'm suspecting that the sound card on it is
broken.

It's trivially obvious to me that the driver isn't loading, and that
isn't surprising given that lspci doesn't expose any audio class device.
Without access to the dmesg, I can only guess that you'll see resource
errors. Is the audio device even enabled in the bios?
