Snort is not a SIGNATURE BASED REACTIVE SECURITY DEVICE, users running
Snort 2.3.x can use Oinkmaster to get new (VRT) rules if they have the
need.
Those that say that Snort 2.3 with the default rules it provided (which
are way more than the current "GPL" ruleset at snort.org) is useless

debian/ubuntu users have to use snort is to install from source. As John
Moser said I see no point in shipping outdated rules so the "new" (it
isn't really that new indeed :-)) vrt rules license should be not a

Is there a problem with using Oinkmaster? The novel concept of users
possibly registering and using the rules themselves?
Really, is it all that useful to have an incomplete set of rules? Would
you run an anti-virus program that had most of the 3+ year old virus
definitions and 5% of the recent
Looks like there is a licensing issue with snort rules as they are
distributed under the VRT Certified Rules license
(http://snort.org/about_snort/licenses/vrt_license.html). See the Debian
