OK so this turned out to be a user error, so I'll have to reject this. I
filed a bug against ubiquity to warn when /home isn't going to be
formatted - see bug 56586 . Thanks for reporting this.

In an ideal world, of course, I should not be the one to have to make
the distinction. ::grin::
In fact, this bug was caused by me; on install, I wouldn't let ubuntu
format my /home partition, and the problem was caused by a permissions
error.
I can never keep all those different Xorg log files
Although the distinction between a bug and a support request are not
always clear, IMHO this should stay open as a bug. The user has not
touched the system, and Ubuntu is supposed to boot without user
intervention.

try looking in your .xsession-errors file - that might give some clues.
Also, i think this is a support request? if so perhaps opening a support ticket
would be better.

I did think I saw something odd when I booted, somthing like "hardware
drivers failed". So heres /var/log/messages for a start.
