solved it using
$ ubuntu-bug audio
it appears that speaker volume was set to 0%, which is hidden in Sound
Preferences
=
1.
$ alsamixer -c1
1b. if not installed =
$ sudo apt-get install alsamixer
2. pull sound volume up

it was working for me in 9.10 x64 Alt but not in 10.04 x64 Alt
using 10.04 x64 Desktop Live it works however

Sorry, I was wrong. There is just a strange behiviour but not a very
serious problem: If you change the connector in the output tab of
the ubunut sound preferences, the sound card is not working any more.
You can't hear anything anymore. But there is an easy way to repair it:
plug in the USB sound
Since 10.04 the sound card is not working any more: there is no sound at
all. In 9.10 it was still working. Is this problem related to this bug?
The problem was already confirmed here in a German speaking Ubuntu

not fixed there either, do you know which upstream version has the

Sorry, I can only see that current http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids file
correctly contains the change (version 2010.05.23). I've added the entry
at https://usb-ids.gowdy.us/read/UD/0ccd/0077 last year (2009-11-24
21:53:50), but maybe it took some time until it was added to the actual
usb.ids
