We are working on this problem. This bug is caused by updated Qt in
Lucid.
And yes, the most convenient way to workaround this is to install updated UGENE
from our PPA

We will prepare Lucid version in the next few days.

BTW, I installed the 1.6.2 version of ugene (for Karmic) from the UniPro
website (amd_64 deb files) in Lucid, and it start just fine (have not
tested it thoroughly, though). This may be a good work-around and help
in pinning down the issue. Ivan - can you make an official "Lucid"

I'm affected by the same error too. In ubuntu 9.10 ugene worked fine.
However, after the distro ugrade to lucid I may not start ugene and got
the /usr/lib/ugene/ugene: symbol lookup error:
