Possibly in the GUI, but not at the ufw CLI level. If someone types in
the commands to enable the firewall, then the firewall should be enabled

Also I just noticed that any already opened webpage that attempts to do
a refresh at any time after the firewall is enabled gets stuck reloading
forever, and there are no log messages of any blocked packets on port
80. The page reloads fine on its next refresh if I disable the firewall.

While trying a few things out, I noticed that I cannot ssh anywhere
after enabling the firewall (using either gufw or "ufw enable" from the
cmdline). The outgoing ssh connection just sits there forever; according
to ssh in verbose mode, it is stuck in the connecting stage. There are
no log messages

Thanks, Jamie. I think you hit the nail on the head. Is there scope for
making ufw or gufw check for live network connections and offering the
user some sort of a warning before continuing? It seems like a problem
that could hit other users, e.g. because on Mint, it is normal for

B Bobo,
RELATED,ESTABLISHED are allowed, but you won't see them just looking at the
primary chains. Either do:
$ sudo iptables -L -n -v
or:
$ sudo ufw show raw # in ufw 0.27 and later
It seems what is happening is that you enabled the firewall while
network activity was happening, so the return

Guys, thanks for the followups. I'm not sure why you are not able to
reproduce what I reported. Perhaps there is a misunderstanding between
us. I have some more detail to help explain what I am seeing.

Hi,
I ran Mint 8 Live in a VM, launched gufw from the terminal, clicked the
Enable button.
Result:
- no trace in terminal
- enabled (green logo and all)
- no rules appear in the GUI
(seems to work as expected).
Then running "sudo ufw status verbose", it simply says that the default

Unfortunately, no - because the Mint 8 Helena LiveCD fails to boot on
this very new PC (incorrect device drivers in old kernel 2.6.31).

I freshly installed Mint 8 Helena Main x64, but it didn't work properly
because of out-of-date drivers for this very new PC, so I installed a
few extra driver-related packages such as iwlagn, firmware-iwlwifi, etc.
As I said, I didn't do anything except run the Firewall GUI dialog once

Was a fresh installation?
I don't understand this problem :O
When Gufw is disabled you will not see any rule, because no rules apply ;)
When you enable Gufw you will see the rules that you PREVIOUSLY added.
Can you confirm this points, please? :)
Thanks!

I only enabled the firewall, as I said, by clicking the button Enabled.
I used the GUI only. I didn't do anything else, so I am assuming what
happened was because of the defaults. This is Mint 8 Helena Main
edition, so it is gufw 9.10.4. Hope that helps.
