Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop
ubuntu-desktop should contain a SMART monitoring daemon, which can produce a notification in Gnome if the disk is about to fail -- for example, SMART metrics are out of bounds, or SMART quick tests fail. Motivation: Consumer-grade hard disks fail once a year on average, so most Ubuntu users will encounter this event at least once during the expected lifetime of a Ubuntu edition. Users should be warned when their disks are about to fail so they can get the disks replaced as quickly as possible. This can save the users' data (by preventing data loss) and money (if the user replaces the disk before the computer warranty expires). The warning is also good for Ubuntu, because faulty disks can lead to a poor user experience (hangs, data loss) which will most likely be associated with Ubuntu, not with the hardware. ** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- No SMART monitoring tool installed by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/567340 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
