The problem was due to the arabic fonts patch.
I just merged with latest debian package, which contains a better patch
avoiding this issue.
The package is now uploaded.

I found a work-around in setting 'QT_IM_MODULE=simple', for example in
/etc/environment. Then dead keys work in every qt3 (but not qt4) based
application with the sole exeption that " followed by space gives an \
instead of ".
Regardless, in KDE's lineedit widgets the input method must be set to
