Hello!
Yesterday (2010-May-30) I came across with a similar problem, I upgraded
from 9.10 -10.04 via update manager and rebooted and I see the Ubuntu
logo with the red dots loading (looks awful and I assume that is
loading) for a few seconds, then the screen goes black (no login screen)

problem, but Nvidia needs Xorg.conf for screen resolution and effects so

I have the same problem with kernel 2.6.32.21, I do not have an NVidia
video card. I can boot to 2.6.31-21 with no problem.
