Hi, I'm on a Quanta MW1 based laptop and I've got the same problem as
many people, but I've done some workaround about the shutdown problem:

With ubuntu (dapper 6.06.1) just installed (no direct rendering),
hibernate works and shutdown works with "sudo halt -h", but you only
have to install the nvidia-glx and everything crashes: impossible to
turn off the laptop and hibernate also doesn't work (supposing everyone
know how to fix the console bug adding "vga=791" to the grub-menu kernel
options). I've tried almost all options noapic, nolapic, acpi=force and
nothing works.

I don't know if this could be helpfull, but that's everything I've
found.
