Tested the issue on a Macbook with Edgy RC and the wireless is still not
detected by the system.

Henk Koster: Installing network-manager (nm-applet) now fixes this
problem. Works flawlessly; in fact, I prefer this method (for ease of
use) over those implemented in WinXP and OSX.

Actually, I have now given up on Ubuntu installed directly to the HD of
my MacBook, and have switched to Ubuntu installed in a Parallels VM
instead. There is no wireless issue now, since the Parallels VM provides
an Ethernet interface (in software) that can use the Airport wireless
NIC of OS X as g
Dean Sas: you're referring to a different network manager, i.e. from the
package "network-manager" (the one with the nm-applet). My bug/comments
pertain to the gnome-network-manager, the one operated via the System -
Administration - Networking menu.

To get network manager to work you must let it manage your interfaces by
commenting out the lines for that interface in /etc/network/interfaces

Some more info:
With the MacBook placed next to the SpeedTouch 585 base station, the
graphical signal strength indicator stands at 100% under OS X, as one
would expect. Yet, under Linux the signal strength appears only about
54/94, considerably below the 94/94 that one would expect.
