I have only one machine left with Ubuntu and will be soon moving away

I would recommend you to upgrade to Lucid . There have been a lot of
improvements in that release. Not only with Ubuntu One, but the OS
overall. However, I understand that you may not wish to upgrade.
There is a newer client available for Karmic in the Beta PPA that you
can try if you continue to
