No, never use totem plugin.
But, in fact, when I completely delete all the .gnome*, .nautilus, and the
.metacity folders from ~ it got way rarer (is 'rarer' a word?).
And the videos came back.

uninstalling the package that is allowing the videos to be displayed?

Yeah.
I renamed my ~/.mozilla folder and it kept being that way.
It's sad... I loved Firefox 2
