Removing the last line, au GUIEnter * set lines=50 columns=80 works around this problem. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that a 50-line gvim window won't necessarily fit on my netbook screen; the window is necessarily downsized to 40 lines. -- invoking gvim from shell results in
