OK, i worked out the reason for that. It seems to be an IPv6 problem. To install addons you have to: 1. add the following lines to /etc/sysctl.conf net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1 net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1 net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1 2. execute: sysctl -p 3.

As far as I'm aware, there's no special firewall setup on my machine. It's a dual boot machine - one disk with XP, the other with Lucid 10.04. My installation of 10.04 is stock-standard - I haven't tweaked any special settings, and neither did I do so when I had 8.04 LTS running (it worked fine!).
