Eyes still burning... must wear shades... going blind stumbling around

Vouching for Tony in his assessment (brightness in GRUB), I would like
to add, if it helps, that using setpci doesn't work in X, either. (e.g.
"setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=B2", etc.) There are two brightness settings
listed, default level '5', the value of one can be changed (IIRC), but
neither changes
Ubuntu crashed twice today. Turning off Compiz. I had Compiz turned off
in Karma because the Compiz would reliably crash it. GLXGears wouldn't
run on it.

Running 2.6.32-22-generic with "acpi=ht" option makes processor run hot.
Fan runs almost constantly. Not a good long solution.
System runs cooler without acpi options. But screen brightness burning
eyes. This is a deal-killer. Going back to Karmic kernel.
