I'm having a very similar problem on my IBM x3650 server with and ATI video
card. If I don't change the mode to F00 I can't see anything.
Maybe there should be an easy way to change this... I remember in ubuntu server
8.04 you could just press F4 and select Safe VGA mode.

I confirm the 2nd part is fixed : on proprietary driver, when GFX
capabilities cannot be foound at boot time, consoles back in text mode
(no fb) and ubuntu logo, while not as beautiful as full logo with
Plymouth, is a text logo too (so it is readable again).

I have the same problem. No VESA modes work, rendering all virtual
consoles unusable containing just the random pixels at the top of the
screen described in the report unless set to default 80x25 mode.
